After six years of faithful service, including many trips between New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts, a six week journey to Scotland, and countless LAN parties, my Maxtor 80 GB external hard drive has finally passed away. Thankfully, the photos and music it contained were backed up elsewhere. Otherwise, this would have been a bitter parting indeed. Off to buy a 1 TB drive for less than I paid for 80 GB six years ago …

So SVN walks in to a bar and sits next to Git. And SVN says, “Hey good lookin’, want to branch and merge?” And Git says, “Whatever, you can’t fork like I can.”

I decided to write a blog entry this morning as I am sitting in a nearly-empty lab, on a day that campus is technically closed (3″ of snow never scared me, but apparently Western Massachusetts is a little more wary). “Snoverkill” is what the Washington Post is calling the southern portions of this weather system - the sequel of “Snowpocalyspe” and other ridiculously-named storms that have hit the mid-Atlantic states since before Christmas. They are stealing all of our snow!

I have a question for eveyone out there: Why is the term “PC” reserved for machines that run Window$? “PC” stands for “personal computer” and is meant to distinguish these machines from servers, mainframes (remember those?) and other non-desktop, commercial or industrial-type computers. An Apple is a PC. It is not a server (OK, some are, but you know what I mean), it is surely not a mainframe - it is a computer for (mainly) personal use - a personal computer. And what about machines that don’t run Window$ or a Mac OS? What about Linux? I suppose some people consider a Linux box a PC, but what about the majority who think PC is synonymous with Micro$oft?

Maybe some snow pictures to follow.

Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières is one the oldest and most reputable aid organizations in the world, has one of the smallest percentages of donations lost to overhead / administrative costs, and currently has a large presence in Haiti (over 800 members). If you can, please help them with their rescue effort, or find some other organization help. It is easy to donate online - I just did it in under 5 minutes.
